About Me
Biography
John Michael has had a deep interest in art and design all of his life. He began studying art seriously over 20 years ago. He has studied with acclaimed artists in a wide variety of art mediums. Specializing in printmaking, etching, oil painting, and ceramics. He has the ability to treat paper and canvas as clay and therefore create three dimensional etchings. His understanding of varied art mediums has allowed him to develop a unique style creating truly one of a kind art work. John Michael’s art work is truly a symphony of techniques as he combines Intaglio etching with chine colle and/or suminagashi and enhances the resulting art work with oils, acrylics, pastels, and graphite in the tradition of renowned French artist, Edgar Degas. He has developed unique methods to create embossment within Intaglio etching allowing him to craft distinctive, detailed three dimensional designs in his art work.
My Technique
I begin my work by creating images on an etching plate made of acrylic. I use scribes to etch images into the plate. I etches deep into the plate to acquire a three dimensional aspect to art my work. I then paint onto the etching plate sometimes using one color at a time or using multiple colors at once. I place dampened paper or canvas onto the plate and run the plate and paper or canvas through an etching press to transfer the paint and 3 dimensional image from the plate to the paper or canvas. The result is a one of a kind piece of art. The amount of color transfer or paint onto the paper or canvas is dependent upon the moisture on the paper or canvas and in the air at the time that the plate and paper or canvas are put through the etching press. These two conditions are impossible to recreate so therefore, each art piece is one of a kind and cannot be recreated
My Inspiration
Art is a passion. I am inspired by nature. I truly love capturing the beauty of nature in my art. I am inspired by the birds inhabiting Newport Bay, by the dragonfly pond at Huntington Gardens in Pasadena, by the Koi ponds in Newport Beach, by the incredible flora of Southern California. I am inspired by the heroes in mythology. I am truly inspired by the inner strength of the people around me. My art reflects the impact on me of the beauty of our environment.
